I was recently in Newport and visited Rosecliff for the first time. Of all the Newport “cottages” that I have seen, it was definitely my number one. While it is still grandiose to be sure, it was not so over-the-top as some of the others (like the Breakers!). I loved how bright it was inside. Huge windows (my favorite) let in so much light. The interior had an airy feeling, maybe due to the ceilings frescoed in shades of blue and cream.
Rosecliff is currently hosting an amazing fashion retrospective of the couture designer Pierre Cardin. All I can say is that I am fascinated with Cardin’s work. I love color and am drawn to editorial and sometimes kooky shapes, and so his pieces were a revelation to me! He definitely did not play it safe with his designs – his hallmarks were avant-garde forms and geometric shapes. The Rosecliff exhibit has over 40 of his original designs from his private archives. If you are in the area, I highly recommend seeing it. The exhibition will be open through Febrary 25th, 2018.
